A Volunteer Day is planned Saturday, April 29 at the Old Dominion Historic Mine Park; with spring in full swing, there will be plenty of cleanup from the winter season as well as new work to be done. Community and civic groups and individuals are invited to come out and help continue the work on this gem of a park. Work will range from cleaning trails and display areas to more specialized work to secure exhibits, put up signage and delineate the parking area. The work will be under way from 7 am through the morning. Water and snacks will be provided, and it is suggested that wear long pants and closed toe shoes and bring gloves, sunscreen and a hat. Anyone with tools they would donate use of for the day such as rakes, hoes and clippers that could be used on the trails is invited to bring them.

The interns are students from Globe and Miami High Schools who are working together with the Frank Lloyd School of Architecture to bring awareness of global and environmental issues to the region. Interns are recruiting student groups to take an active focus on the environment by working in their communities to clean up pollution, plant trees and to present and discuss environmental concerns that face the region’s youth. Student groups will present environmental projects, host all ages Earth Day activities and make speeches about the environment from 2-6 pm at Bullion Plaza Park. Earth Day is an international day of focus on the environment that began in the United States back in the 70’s. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Today, Earth Day is observed in 192 countries and celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide every year. This year’s Earth Day celebration will take place during the 8th Annual Miami Loco Arts Festival. Miami Loco is a free 3 day festival that brings artists, poets and bands to town for a celebration of the arts.
