Signage Regulations

The City of Globe requires permits for all business signs. For more information please contact the City of Globe Building Safety Department

It is the intent of the City of Globe to establish reasonable sign regulations to promote economic development, a visually attractive environment and ensure traffic safety.  The City of Globe has an adopted sign ordinance which sets the standard regarding the placement, design, and types of signs permitted within the City of Globe.

Sign regulations protect property values; provide an improved visual environment for citizens and visitors; promote and aid the tourist industry; protect the general public from damage and injury which may be caused by faulty and uncontrolled construction of signs; protect motorists and pedestrians from possible injury caused by the distractions or obstruction on improperly situated signs; and promote the public safety, welfare, convenience, and enjoyment of travel and the free flow of traffic within the City of Globe.

In no case shall any sign:

a. Be animated, audible, rotate or have intermittent or flashing illumination, emit audible sound or visible matter.

b. Be located within five feet of an interior property line. (Exempt from this provision is light fixtures and maintenance platforms)

c. Be erected in a public easement or right-of-way or project closer than two feet from any curb line or vehicle right-of-way, except for signs located in the historic district which shall be reviewed under those applicable regulations. Any sign projecting into any public easement or right-of-way must be wall mounted and shall be located higher than eight feet above grade.

d. Be erected in a location prohibited by this Code.

e. Be erected so as to prevent free ingress to or egress from any door or window, or any other exit way required by the current edition of the Building Code, or by the Fire Department regulations.

f. Be attached to any public utility pole, or structure, light pole, lamp, lamp post, tree, fire hydrant, bridge, curb, sidewalk or other surface located on public property. Signs are also not allowed to be placed in roadway medians.

g. Be attached to a standpipe, gutter drain, or fire escape nor shall any sign be erected so as to impair access to the roof.

h. Be erected in any location where, by reason of its location, will obstruct view of any authorized traffic sign, signal, or other traffic control device. Nor may any sign, by reason of its shape, position or color, interfere with or be confused with any authorized traffic signal sign or device. Further, no sign shall be erected in a location where it will obstruct vision of the public right-of-way to the vehicle operator during ingress to, egress from or while traveling on said public right-of-way.

i. Operate or employ any stereopticon or motion picture projection or similar media projection in conjunction with any advertisements, or have visible moving parts or any portion of which moves, or give the illusion of motion, except as permitted in this Code.

h. Be erected within future public right-of-way as established by future width lines.

The following signs are permitted without a permit:

  • Garage/Yard Sale Signs: Maximum 3'X2' in size, (six square feet). Generally these signs are placed out the night or morning of the event. PLEASE refer to the above listed non-permitted uses.

  • Political Signs: (A.R.S. §16-1019)

  • Real Estate/For Sale Signs (CC&R’s/HOA Deed restrictions): The size of a sign offering a property for sale shall be in conformance with the industry standard size sign, which shall not exceed eighteen by twenty-four inches, and the industry standard size sign rider, which shall not exceed six by twenty-four inches (A.R.S. §33-441)

Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC DISTRICT)

Where applicable, additional reviews conducted by the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee and permit submittal is required for properties located in the City of Globes identified historic district (HPAC).
