Russell Gulch Landfill  Dollar Day Resumes Dec. 9
Gila County's once-a-month discount ‘Dollar Day’  returns Dec. 9, after being on hiatus for most of the past year during a massive construction and excavation project at Russell Gulch Landfill. On the second Saturday each month county residents may dispose of waste at a significantly reduced rate of $1-per-load. This discount is limited to residents, and excludes commercial haulers. Please bring coins or a dollar bill for loads that will cost just a buck; debit or credit cards are accepted for additional fees. Bringing $1 cash to pay for the discount is a helpful courtesy, quicker and more efficient than credit cards, and bringing that dollar avoids credit card fees and time spent to process a one dollar credit card transaction.

The once-a-month dollar day discount remained in place this past year at Buckhead Mesa Landfill north of Payson.

Dollar Day discount limited to 1,000 Pounds.  On Dec. 9 and continuing on the second Saturday each month residents can pay just $1 to dispose of one load up to 1,000 pounds. Truck or trailer loads weighing over 1,000 pounds will be charged $1 for the first 1,000 pounds and the existing fee rate for everything else over 1,000 pounds. Landfill staff remind landfill users to tarp, cover and secure loads of trash - state and local laws require all loads must be covered or secured - that applies to residential haulers as well as commercial, and applies on ‘dollar day,’ too. The dollar day discount was created for residential users -- and proof of Gila County residency is required. Commercial haulers pay regular landfill fees.

Most loads Cost $7.50
Landfill staff say $7.50 includes up to 320 pounds of typical household waste, with an additional three-cents per pound for heavier loads. $7.50 also covers up to 280 pound loads of other waste such as construction debris, mixed loads, metal, large brush.
Hauling a load of residential grass clippings, leaves, limbs and shrubs? That’s considered ‘green waste’, and the fee is $5 for 280 pounds or less, plus a slight surcharge for heavier loads. A ‘brush rate’ applies when tree limbs are larger than four inches diameter.

The Recycling and Landfill Management Division:

Responsible for the operation and compliance of two active landfills; two waste tire collection sites; and four closed landfills.  Gila County landfills actively recycle green waste, metal, batteries, oil, and tires. All Payson's green waste is chipped and hauled to Snowflake, as fuel for the White Mountain Biomass power plant. The Recycling and Landfill Management Division operates under the rules and regulations of the EPA and ADEQ.

The Gila County Landfills accept 47,000 tons of refuse yearly between the two landfills.
Click here for the current fee schedule for refuse.

Recycling and Diversion Programs:

Bikes discarded in the landfill are refurbished by labor from the Department of Corrections with all parts paid for by the Landfill, then distributed to children from low income households.
60 bikes were distributed in the county during 2021.
570 tons of metal and 2,500 gallons of used motor oil are  recycled annually .
50,495 waste tires as well  – and all Gila County waste tires are shipped to CRM in Queen Creek.

From June 30 to the end of December the Russell Gulch Landfill accepted 3,541 tons of debris from the disastrous combination of fire and flooding from the Telegraph and Mescal Fires,  assisting the community with cleanup.
