City of Globe Takes Action to Protect Residents Prior to Weekend Storms

Globe, AZ  - The City of Globe, in coordination with Gila County Emergency Management, the State of Arizona, and multiple partner agencies, continues to take proactive steps to address impacts from last week’s flooding and prepare for additional storms forecasted this weekend.

City staff, including Public Works crews and Fire Department personnel, along with teams from the Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) as well as the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Arizona Department of Transportation, are actively working to clear dead and downed vegetation from the creek, remove debris, and open culverts to improve water flow. 10-wheeler dump trucks have been put into use to assist with hauling out debris, and fire crews are using high-pressure hoses to clear storm drains throughout the community.

In addition to ongoing debris removal, after consultation with Gila County, the City of Globe and Matlock Gas have entered into an agreement to allow for the safe removal and relocation of propane tanks remaining on the Matlock property prior to the weekend storms. This process is being conducted using local contractors deployed by the City of Globe under safety oversight of the City and in accordance with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) guidance and federal standards.

According to ADEQ, propane tanks that are empty are not considered hazardous waste under 40 CFR 261.7(a)(1). Tanks that still contain propane are also not classified as waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) as long as the product remains usable.

As of Thursday morning, propane tanks at risk are being relocated to the City of Globe Public Works Yard, high above the flood plain. The City is ensuring that all efforts are in compliance with all environmental and safety regulations while prioritizing community safety and the protection of our residents.

Sandbag operations remain ongoing at the City of Globe Public Works Yard located at 150 S. Hagen Road, where staff and volunteers are filling and staging sandbags throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to pick up sandbags before rain begins and to prepare properties in advance.

“Our staff and partners have been working around the clock to make sure our community is as safe as possible going into this next round of storms,” said Mayor Al Gameros. “We ask everyone to stay alert, avoid low-lying areas, and follow road and closure notices for their safety and the safety of our crews.”

The City of Globe remains under Mayor Gameros’s Declaration of Emergency, alongside Gila County and the State of Arizona. To strengthen response efforts, the City has also appointed a temporary Emergency Manager to coordinate additional resources and streamline communication between agencies.

As part of these coordination efforts, the City has also established plan to provide local lookouts positioned throughout key areas of the community to monitor changing weather and creek conditions in real time. These lookouts provide immediate situational updates to public safety officials and emergency managers, ensuring rapid response to any developing flood activity.

The City encourages everyone to take precautions now:

  • Stay out of low-lying and flood-prone areas, including low areas along the US 60 and parts of Downtown Globe.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.

  •  Keep drainage areas clear and prepare properties with sandbags.

  • Have an emergency plan and alternate routes ready.
