In the late thirteenth century, a new type of pottery that archaeologists call "Salado polychrome" appeared across a broad swath of the southern Southwest. A better understanding of the technology used to create this pottery will help answer some of the questions related to Salado as a cultural phenomenon. Potter and independent researcher Andy Ward will discuss how he reverse-engineered Salado pottery to reproduce Salado polychrome pottery, the lessons learned along the way, and what they teach us about these ancient people. After the lecture, there will be a demonstration of pottery firing.
